Buggy 55

Recommended Posts

Ok... So I did a thing...

It doesn't have a name yet... But I saved all the pictures in a folder called "Buggy 55".  So we will go with that for now.

The short list:

05 LQ9 6.0

4L60 with a 2500 stall Hughes torque converter

2 speed Atlas - 4.3

Front - Dana 60, ARB, chromo shafts, CTM joints, Branik parts all over.  Howe full hydro.

Rear - 14 bolt shaved, Detroit, 300m Branik axles PSC full hydro with manual control

42" Reds on 20" KMC bead locks with like 5 trips on them

16" ORI's

113" wheelbase

53" frame width

84" wide at the outside of the tires.

Been looking at the thing since like May.  Picked it up in Reno this last weekend.

It has lots of good parts.  Some not as good as the $100k+++ rigs that I really wanted... But will be a good starter/learner rig.

Current project is getting it to idle correctly.  Something is causing it to idle at 1500-2000 and you can't hold it with the brakes in low range.

Ugh.  Looks badass man.  Congrats.   And now the fun begins.   Learning how to wheel it.

So far I have mastered getting it off the trailer when it won't idle under 1500 RPM.  It's like doing a burnout and falling off a cliff at the same time.

Ok so now that you have it what are some plans in mind? Is there anything you want to change right away?

Also, wife said yes to rock buggy...so my goal is to have one before Jeff LOL.

I want to pull out the detroit in the rear and install an ARB.  Go from 35 to 40 spline at the same time.  Plus then I will be able to use the turning brake.

Other than that just get everything working and do some shakedown runs.

It has only been on a few trails.  The bugs never got worked out of it.  I don't think the rear brakes do anything at this point.

- Fuel gauge hooked up

- Speedometer hooked up

- Fuel filler neck installed

- Communications setup

- Label the switches

- Nut/Bolt check

- New hood pins

- New steering wheel

- 2nd set of tires for local use

- Turn signals, license plate mount, etc.

- License

- Tuning so it idles correctly

- Panel color change

Best hurry if you want to be ahead of Jeff... I think I put him in overdrive...

Looks like you got a good plan going Byron. I must have missed it but what chassis again?

Not a brand name of any kind.

It was built by Neil Hancock in Arizona.  I guess he has made a few.  Doesn't seem like a bad design.  Only down side I see right now is getting in and out of it.  That has more to do with me being fat than the design.

Got some stuff done.   Found more issues including a bad rear driveshaft.

Engine is running much better after new injectors and some tuning.  Not having a fuel filter really caused some issues.  That shouldn’t be a problem anymore!

This injector was even cracked causing a vacuum leak.

New fuel filter

Old driveshaft with 1350’s and jacked up splines.

New Adam’s driveshaft with a CV and 1410 joints.  Built out of 2.5" .250 wall.  It's heavy!

Got the coms setup installed.  All the gauges are working.  Had to buy a converter for the fuel level sending unit.  Added a USB charging port at the top.

Nice work man. So when is that pig gonna hit Sand Hollow? Nice job on the fuel filter and DS.

Not sure yet.  I know this month and next are out due to work and another trip.  October/November maybe?

I really just need to get some seat time.  I spent about an hour in it Sunday and found out I need to change how the seat sits.  I thought it was going to be good until I spent time trying to hold my foot off the throttle going down hill.

Johnson Valley is good around Thanksgiving......

Hopefully I get Vengeance together to make it there.
